Dermal Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

One of the drawbacks of old-style cosmetic procedures was the need for surgery to achieve changes. This often meant that minor corrections to appearance didn’t justify the expense or risk of a conventional facelift.

Injectable treatments have revolutionized the range of aesthetic procedures that are now possible with minimally invasive techniques. Using substances already found in the body, dermal fillers, such as the Juvéderm® line of injectables, offer support for aging skin by literally propping up the outer layers that have settled into lines, folds and wrinkles.

Another new cosmetic innovation is Kybella®. Too often the condition known as a double chin can add years to your appearance. Injectable treatments of Kybella act as an anti-filler, removing the fullness that causes a double chin.

How do Juvéderm products work?

Juvéderm offers a range of gel fillers, each intended for different target areas. Each of these gels use hyaluronic acid (HA) as a base. HA is a substance that’s already found in the deeper layers of the skin. It attracts and retains moisture, a key factor in good skin conditioning. The gels are formulated for various support and diffusion characteristics.

Voluma® XC lifts and contours cheeks, adding volume and fullness to restore a more youthful profile. Treatments last up to two years, and repeat treatments typically use less product to achieve the same effect.

Vollure™ XC targets the lines and folds at each side of the mouth, the “parentheses” lines. Treatments can last up to 18 months.

Volbella® XC adds fullness to the lips and smooths vertical lip lines. Lips retain fullness about a full year after treatment. Results will vary from patient-to-patient, depending on skin condition at the time of treatment.

How does Kybella work?

Though it’s not technically a filler, Kybella is injected in much the same way as fillers. Kybella uses deoxycholic acid, a chemical found in the body that breaks down and disposes of dietary fat. With Kybella, the acid targets the fat cells that form the double chin, flushing these from the body over several weeks.

Depending on your chin profile, you may need up to six treatments, each a month apart, to achieve full effect. However, once these fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

Kybella treatments involve simple injections and require with little to no downtime.
